Principles of Our Environment Policy

The introduction of improved environmental standards is given high priority at MKM; during our ongoing production processes we make repeated checks on the quality of waste materials, sewage and emissions. Our environment policy is in keeping with the relevant statutory regulations and implementation directives.
Our aim is the reduction of pollutants, emissions and waste materials. We reduce the use of raw materials by recycling our own copper waste and that of our business partners. We continue to work on minimizing our use of fresh water by treating and re-using waste water from the production division. With the aim of preserving natural energy resources, we are reducing our consumption of natural gas by making more use of waste heat from our smelting and production plants.
We purchase environment-friendly supplies, fuels and raw materials, as a means of reducing the quantity of dangerous waste. We inform our customers fully about our products, and thereby also help enable them to take a more environmentally-friendly approach.
When implementing new statutory regulations and approval processes, we work closely together with local authorities. We undertake regular checks and evaluations on our environmental behaviour in accordance with our annual safety conference.
We also expect a similar commitment to the environment from our suppliers and our contractors, checking their credentials as regards suitable certification. In accordance with the new European regulations on chemicals - REACH - we will ensure that our products contain only registered substances (metals).
Current information about REACH – Pre registration of 16 metals and substances
Although MKM as a producer of semi-finished products of copper and copper alloys is not obliged to register we pre registered in September 2008 the following metals and substances:
|
Name |
Chemical Symbol |
CAS no. |
| Silver | Ag | 7440-22-4 |
| Aluminium | Al | 7429-90-5 |
| Cerium | Ce | 7440-45-1 |
| Chromium | Cr | 7440-47-3 |
| Copper | Cu | 7440-50-8 |
| Iron | Fe | 7439-89-6 |
| Manganese | Mn | 7439-96-5 |
| Nickel | Ni | 7440-02-0 |
| Phosphorus | P | 7723-14-0 |
| Lead | Pb | 7439-92-1 |
| Sulfur | S | 7704-34-9 |
| Tin | Sn | 7440-31-5 |
| Zinc | Zn | 7440-66-6 |
The non-mentioned registered metals and substances are not currently included in our products. Their pre registration secures the future development of materials.
With this step we have significantly increased the safety of our business, because we can now jointly with our customers benefit from the transition periods until the final registration.
Because copper is essential for our business we registered this metal, also in the interest of our customers, on 9.11.2010.
The submission report can be made available for viewing on request.
